Declined Check

If your check was declined

Many merchants use a check authorization service at the point of sale. The service returns an approve or decline response based on information available at that moment. If your check was declined and the merchant referred you to CPS, we can provide you with the information contained in the consumer report we maintain about you and help you resolve it.

Why a check may be declined

  • A returned, unpaid check is on file for the account, including items placed by other merchants
  • The bank account is reported closed, frozen, or has insufficient available funds
  • The check or ID could not be read or verified
  • The transaction did not fit the merchant's or the authorization service's risk guidelines

A decline is not a statement that you did anything wrong. It is a risk decision made at the time of the transaction. The authorization service may be CPS or another company; the merchant or the notice you received will tell you who to contact.

If you were referred to CPS

  • Call the declines hotline at 1-866-755-0340. A representative can tell you what information CPS has on file and whether it affected the decision.
  • If an unpaid item is on file with CPS, contact us to discuss your returned check. We can help you arrange payment by phone, card, or payment link, and paying it resolves the record.
  • If you believe the information is wrong, file a dispute. We will investigate and correct or delete anything that is inaccurate.
  • Request a free copy of your CPS consumer report (see below).

If you were referred to a different company, please contact that company directly; CPS does not have access to its records.

Statement Questions

If you see CPS or Check Plus on your bank or credit statement

CPS processes payments on behalf of merchants. A charge or debit labeled CPS, Check Plus, or CPS-[merchant name] is usually one of the following.

What it could be

  • A check you wrote that was converted to an electronic payment or re-presented after it was returned unpaid
  • A payment you made to CPS by phone, card, or online to resolve a returned check
  • A service fee permitted by state law on a returned check, shown with the merchant's name

If you don't recognize it

Call 1-877-421-6077 or use the form. Tell us the date, amount, and the exact description on your statement. We will identify the transaction and, if it was not authorized, tell you how to have it reversed.

Please do not dispute a transaction with your bank before contacting us if you simply need to know what it was — we can usually explain it in one call.

Unfamiliar transaction inquiry

Thank you. We'll contact you at the phone or email provided.
Your Consumer Report

Request a copy of your report, or dispute what's in it

CPS maintains check-writing history used to approve or decline check transactions. You may request a free copy of the information CPS has about you, and you may dispute anything you believe is inaccurate or incomplete. Requests are handled under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (15 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq.).

How to request your report

Submit the form here, call 1-877-421-6077, or write to the Ringwood address. For your protection we verify identity before releasing a report. We will mail your report to the address on file or the address you verify with us.

How to dispute

Tell us what you believe is wrong and why. Include any documentation (for example, a bank letter showing a check was paid). We investigate and respond in writing, and correct or delete information that cannot be verified.

If you've been declined based on information CPS provided, you are entitled to request this report free of charge.
